When Pollution Runs Wild

Pollution of surface water, ground water, and the Everglades is due to runoff of pesticides and fertilizer used by farmers. Because of this, the fish are being killed and it is contaminating the water they live in. The federal lawmakers are trying to have farmers reduce the amount of pesticides and other chemicals they use to reduce the amount of nitrate contaminating the water. Some farmers have followed what the lawmakers created and the amount of contamination and pollution has reduced, but they cannot completely tell whether or not it is due to the reduced use of contaminants. High levels of nitrate can cause a loss of oxygen for small children and result in blue baby syndrome. Also, due to the phosphorus and nitrogen that washes down into the marshes after a rainfall, the everglades, which are naturally nutrient poor, have the growth of cattails. They produce carbon, which depletes the amount of oxygen in water so no fish can live there. As a result, the Everglades may be the most endangered national park.
