Chemistry Homework #1

I think that water supply is more important because if water weren’t supplied to people, the population would decline and the human population would eventually die off if enough people didn’t get the necessary amount of water needed for survival.

Pg 17 #1-3

      1.     For each region in the United States, name the greatest single use of water.
               A. The East: 78%-Steam/electric
               B. The South: 63%- Steam/electric
               C. The Midwest: 57%-Steam/electric
               D. The West: 77%- Irrigation/agricultural
               E. Alaska: 55%- Mining
               F. Hawaii: 57%-Irrigation/agricultural

      2.     The differences of how water is used in the East compared to the West are the climate, as well as the type of industrial uses. In the East, the climate is harsh and cold with snow and rain, and has many industries. While in the West, there is warmer weather and the industry is through farming rather than factories.

      3.     The high use of water for steam/electric use in the East and Midwest is due to the colder, wetter weather to provide heat for homes. In the South, there is similar water demand for steam/electric, except the use is for air conditioning instead of heat because of the hotter southern weather. The increased use of water for irrigational/agricultural purposes is because of the farming economy and hot weather in the West and Hawaii. Alaska has the highest use of water for mining because it’s economy is based upon the gold found there as well as the drilling in the gold mines.

1.     No, he did use water because water is needed to make the container to hold the juice as well as irrigate the fruit trees and process the fruit produced.

2.     In producing a loaf of bread, water is needed because in order to create the bread, eggs, water and yeast are main ingredients. The eggs themselves include a lot of water because water was necessary in order for the chicken that laid it to live, as well as grow the chicken’s food. Water is also necessary in bread to react to the yeast to help make the bread rise when put into the oven.

8.  The total water of the world has not changed in the last 100 years or 1   million years because the water goes through a hydrologic (water) cycle where it can be seen in three different forms: liquid, gas, and solid. Water falls as rain or snow, it melts into large bodies of water, evaporates into the air, and falls again.

9.   1st:  Oceans (most)
      2nd: Glaciers
      3rd: Water Vapor
      4th: Rivers (least)

10.  A situation where this would be true would be in a desert. This is because in a desert it is all sand and there is usually no water to be found easily. But there is water, because it is in the air.

11.  77% of water is used for irrigation and agriculture in the West.

12.  A. Glaciers and icecaps: 2.11% of the fresh water
       B. Lakes: 0.009% of the fresh water

13.  It is possible that a molecule of water that I drank today was once swallowed by a dinosaur because water in the world has not changed for over a million years by repeatedly going through the hydrologic cycle.

17.  The discrepancy could be caused by the values of the amount of water used in each case was taken at different time periods in the U. S.
